About DYEP

The Duquesne Youth Employment Program (DYEP) is a seven-week program for local high school aged youth that includes career building, civic responsibility, media work, service learning projects, urban farming, urban gardening, community development and improvement, social entrepreneurship and leadership internships.

Duquesne PA. is a town that is 12 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. In the early 20th century, the "heart and soul" of the town was based in its steel mill, Duquesne Works. Now, in a postindustrial landscape, Duquesne is not thriving like it once was. There are few businesses and many shuttered buildings. Also, in 1991, Duquesne was designated a financially distressed municipality by the state of Pennsylvania.

The purpose of this blog is to showcase the work youth are completing while at DYEP, particularly with media work. Youth employees and staff members will post writing responses, photographs, and other forms of expression that will show the strengths and needed improvements of the Duquesne community.
